Environment and circular economy transition in China

PROJECTS

China Integrated Waste Management NAMA Support Project

The NAMA Support Project aims to support China’s ambition for low carbon development through piloting integrated waste management solutions. These solutions are implemented in demonstrations municipalities: There, greenhouse gas emissions are measured and key performance indicators are introduced, in order to evaluate progress later on and finally, technical assistance and policy recommendations are provided. Simultaneously, the project connects decision-makers and collaborates with the private sector on specific matters, such as investment opportunities.

Supported by: NAMA Facility, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China (MoHURD)

Overall term: 2017 to 2022

Sino-German Strategic Alliance for Advanced Biomethane Technology

The project aims to deploy biomethane as a source of renewable energy in China to cover part of the demand for clean and reliable energy. The main goal of the alliance is to develop a replicable flagship biomethane demonstration project. Through this cooperation, Best Available Techniques (BAT) & Best Environmental Practices (BEP) from Germany is brought to China and both national and international  sectoral exchanges are facilitated.

Supported by: German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) under the develoPPP programme, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MoARA) of the People’s Republic of China

Overall term: 2018 to 2022

Rethinking Plastics – Circular Economy Solutions to Marine litter

With the amount of single-use plastic rapidly increasing worldwide, „Rethinking Plastics“ aims to counteract this trend in China by implementing activities for the sustainable consumption and production of plastic and for the management of existing plastic waste and marine litter. Moreover, the project supports existing policy dialogue between the EU and regional stakeholders and hopes to include both public authorities and citizens in the conversation by raising awareness around this issue.

Supported by: European Union (EU), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Overall term: 2019 to 2022

SINO-GERMAN PROJECT FOR Upgrading Plastics Management in Agriculture

The project addresses the problem of soil pollution in agriculture through the use of mulch film, which is widely used in China: The film generates large amounts of plastic waste due to its short life cycle and its remains on the fields lead to significant crop reduction. The project supports the management of plastic mulch film in China by enhancing the recycling efficiency of PE mulch film and promoting the utilization of biodegradable mulch film.

Supported by: German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) under the develoPPP programme, GEM, Covestro, Evonik, TÜV Rheinland, China Automotive Technology & Research Center

Overall term: 2021 to 2023

Waste to resource

With its focus on packaging waste, especially PET bottle, paper-based beverage container, flexible package, delivery package as well as non-PET container (i.e. HDPE bottle within the scope of project), Waste to Resource Project (hereafter refer to as “WtR Project”) enables the upgrading of package waste recycling chain through all kinds of measures.

Supported by: German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) under the develoPPP programme, GEM, Henkel, Tomra, UPM, Nongfu Spring,  Tetra Pak

Overall term: 2021 to 2024
