A comprehensive system for monitoring and assessing MSW management systems does not yet exist in China. Building on international best-practice, the award-winning “Wasteaware Benchmark Indicators for Integrated Sustainable Waste Management in Cities”, a system of indicators has been developed for China to fill this gap. The proposed system covers both waste management infrastructure and governance and allows for continuous monitoring of cities’ progress on the path towards low-carbon integrated waste management.
