DEMONSTRATION MUNICIPALITIES STEPPED INTO A LOWER CARBON MSWM IN 2020
In November 2020, the project team of Integrated Waste Management NAMA Support Project (IWM NSP) and technical experts jointly completed the KPI assessment and greenhouse gas emission reduction monitoring in the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) sector for 2020 in five demonstration municipalities.

China has for the fifth time during the last 25 years revised its Law on Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Waste. The updated version of the legislation will be implemented in September promising better protection of the environment and strengthened rule of law.
IWM NAMA LOW-CARBON INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT SYMPOSIUM WAS HELD IN BENGBU ON SEPT 7-8
“IWM NAMA Low-carbon Integrated Waste Management Symposium” was held in Bengbu, Anhui Province. This Symposium invited domestic experts to attend in person and international scholars join online, sharing and showcasing the Best Practices as well as exchanging the latest trends in the waste sector.
CAPACITY BUILDING IN 2020 — CHINA IWM NSP GOES ONLINE
China Integrated Waste Management NAMA Support Project (China IWM NSP) has adjusted its “modes of delivery” and started organising online trainings for its major stakeholders. The first event took place on March 24 and provided private sector actors with an opportunity to learn more about the process of organic waste treatment focusing on available technologies and specific case-studies, attracting approximately 60 practitioners to enrol in the “remote class”.

The demonstration municipalities of China Integrated Waste Management NAMA Support Project (China IWM NSP) have cumulatively decreased emissions from their municipal solid waste management (MSWM) by 492,505 tCO2e in 2019.
DEMONSTRATION MUNICIPALITIES SHOW BETTER RESULTS IN KPI ASSESSMENT
In November 2019, as part of a regular monitoring tour, the team of China Integrated Waste Management NAMA Support Project (China IWM NSP) jointly with the experts from Wasteaware conducted its first annual assessment of waste management systems in the demonstration municipalities according to the system of Key Performance Indicators. The results show that in comparison to the baseline study, all cities managed to improve their municipal solid waste management (MSWM) either in terms of infrastructure or with respect to governance.
Straw clean-heating is being promoted in Northern China
China has abundant crop straw resources. According to statistics, the annual resource utilization is about 837 million tons, and about 137 million tons are not effectively utilized. In recent years, the Chinese government has attached great importance to the problem of clean-heating in the northern regions and encouraged the promotion of biomass heating technologies such as straw in rural areas to replace traditional raw coal combustion and alleviate air pollution.

Strengthening the Sino-German Biomethane Technology Exchange: Design Review Workshop of Pilot Plant
In early 2019, the project team of “Sino-German Strategic Alliance for Advanced Biomethane Technology” completed the overall design of the pilot plant in Inner Mongolia. To better understand and evaluate the current design from the various perspective of multi-stakeholders as well as to strengthen the Sino-German exchange on biomethane technology, GIZ, together with its project partners, organized a workshop at the site of the pilot plant in Ulanhot, Inner Mongolia. More than 70 representatives from government, academia and private sector participated the two day event on July 3-4, 2019.
